The Opportunity
As a Legal Counsel at Abt Associates, you will play a pivotal role in supporting and advising the organization on various legal matters related to its business and project operations in Africa. These legal issues encompass a wide range, including employment and safety law, corporate law, privacy and data protection law, immigration law, tax law, and compliance with client contract and local law requirements. Your responsibilities will include:
Core Responsibilities
- Operations, Employment, Disputes (80%): Working closely with the Associate General Counsel, you will provide practical, accurate, and timely legal advice, training, and support to key stakeholders in Abt’s business and project operations in Africa. This includes handling operational, employment, and disputes-related legal issues.
- Privacy (10%): Collaborating with the Associate General Counsel responsible for the Privacy practice area, you will provide legal advice on privacy, intellectual property, and data protection matters. This includes managing internal projects, legal disputes, and regulatory investigations when necessary.
- General (10%): You will support the Associate General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel in developing a pragmatic legal framework for Abt’s legal affairs in Africa. This involves legal risk management, legal operations, management of external counsel relationships and fees, and staying updated on relevant changes in local laws.
What We Value
To thrive in this role, you should possess the following qualifications and characteristics:
- A degree in law and the ability to practice law in one or more of the job locations or another relevant jurisdiction (e.g., US, UK, Australia).
- A minimum of 8 years of prior relevant work experience.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Good cultural awareness and the ability to build strong stakeholder relationships.
- High-level problem-solving, organization, and attention to detail skills.
- Ability to work autonomously and in a team environment.
- Capacity to manage multiple complex tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
- Willingness to travel internationally within Africa and to the United States.
- Experience in relevant areas of law in an in-house context.
- Experience in the international development sector.
- English language skills are required, and French language skills are preferred.
